Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2008 To: smarshall@macon.com,crichardson@macon.com,pdodson@macontel.com Subject: FHR and the Xanadu drinking problems A middle-of-the-road
In the City of Nacom, there is a road named Xanadu. High School Math Problem For generations, Xanadu (X) has always had two-eleven foot wide travel lanes - one in each direction. But Officials plan to widen and straighten X so they can drive faster. They want to do this because all their friends and media news sources have convinced them of this image - Heaven on Earth can be obtained by driving a fast new car on a highway to somewhere. Nacom engineers draw up privatized-for-profit plans to widen the two 11 foot lanes to 12 feet each. They add a 10 foot lane for walking foot traffic. They also add - a popular feature for Nacom roads - a supersized 14 foot lane for crazy, lazy and random drivers in an aptly named "Suicide Lane" that they place prominently in the very center of the two regular-drivers lanes. Since the road's footprint is now more than doubled, it covers the drainage swales (ditches) that are needed to carry stormwater away from the traffic. So they add another 8 foot lane for water traffic designed as curbs and gutters - then they split this "water lane" and put 4 feet of it on each side of the road. They also decide to split the 10 foot pedestrian lane in two, and then place it - as sidewalks - beyond the curbs and gutters. Question: 1. How wide is this Xanadu project planned to be? You must use Standard English measurements - ie. feet, inches, yards. (Hint the Nacom Telegraph reports and maintains that the road is 3-4 lanes wide) a X=22 (feet) b 24 c 33 d 44 e 56 f. 138 2. How much greater is the "Road Capacity" of the Xanadu? a 2 (feet) b 11 c 33 d 42 e none f. Don't know what "Road Capacity " means. |

Ethics in Reporting Problem
Mary is a citizen-volunteer who sometimes provides information to
reporter-Bob at the local newspaper. One day the Chief sees Bob
stick a backscratcher down Mary's shirt, and Mary pulls away and
appears angry - just then, all 3 people notice each other and
Chief ducks into a meeting - hoping that Bob and Mary will quit goofing
off and get back to focusing on the story at hand.Later that day, Chief gets an email from Mary "Please instruct Bob to keep his hands off of me!". Chief forwards this email to Bob who replies "You saw everything that happened. My hands never touched that woman". Does Chief now : 1- reward Bob for his more precise and analytical description of the event? 2- ridicule Mary for her emotional and inaccurate reporting of the event? 3- go to local bar on Xanadu Rd for a drink? |
