Design Option for Forest Hill Road

Schraalenburgh Road, Haworth, NJ.

Pictures above were taken in front of 324 Schraalenburgh Road, Haworth, NJ. This part of NJ was settled by the English and the Dutch before the Revolutionary war and the area was known as Schraalenburgh (Dutch) and Schralenburg (English). It later became part of Bergen County and was chopped into boroughs between 1895 and 1905. The area has enough pre-Revolutionary homes to totally frustrate the highwaymen at NJDOT as homes were built close to the roads. You cannot see it in the picture because of the trees, but one such home is in the background on right-side of image. This part of NJ has NJDOT bus transit into NYC instead of railroads.

In the very short QuickTime movie (link-here S-burgh-Haworth-NJ4.MOV ) you can see two of these large buses passing on the two-lane road.

The images with file names beginning with Wash-t were taken on Washington Avenue in Bergenfield, NJ. This location is several miles south of the first one on the same street which is named differently. Other than cosmetic changes in the storefronts and some narrowing of the sidewalks to permit bus stops., intersection has changed little in fifty years.

Even though interstate bus traffic at this point is much higher than in first set of pictures, the historic nature of the location has kept the highwaymen from making Washington Avenue into an expressway.

Hope these pictures help. I would sure want to see the detailed plans and traffic simulations before agreeing to any change on Forest Hill.
