Meeting:
Our first meeting was a great start in defeating the SPLOST on July 20. We talked about strategies and how to best present the facts about the July 20 SPLOST. One myth going around is that Bibb County has been ordered to build a NEW courthouse. That is not true. The judicial order specifically said that the judges did not decide if renovation or building a new courthouse was best - that is the County's decision. The County Commissioners are hiding behind the judges and saying “It is not our fault we have to spend $90 million. The judges made us.” That is simply not true. Many people commented that this is the wrong time for a SPLOST. Many businesses are struggling with the tough economy and laying off employees. Adding an additional tax burden now does not make sense. The other fact that was discussed is the timing of projects. Because of the way the County has structured the SPLOST, only the courthouse will be funded for three years. Only after the Taj Mahal courthouse has been funded will the City and County be able to work on other vital projects like storm drainage and recreation. As City Council member and Chairman of the Appropriation Committee Mike Cranford put it: “The City and the County would actually get their money faster if SPLOST was (defeated and ) brought up in a year.” CALL FOR ACTION Many people have asked "How can I help and get involved? What can I do?" Talk to your friends and neighbors. Ask them to vote NO on July 20. We are building a database of supporters. We need names and email addresses. Please send this information to Frank Pinkston at frankp0@cox.net. Listed below are the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of the Mayor, City Council members, and the Bibb County Commissioners. Write or call the Mayor and Council telling them you support the City’s opposition to the SPLOST. Let the County Commission hear from you also. We believe that voicing your opposition to this ill-advised SPLOST can make a huge difference. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Send them to us by email at Tax-Payer@macon-bibb.com WEBPAGE and FACEBOOK We now have a webpage that has lots of information on the facts about the SPLOST and our reasons for opposing it. The web page is available at www.macon-bibb.com/SPLOST. We also have a Facebook area at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=126598477369890 Thanks for your help. Working together we can defeat this ill-advised tax increase. Remember to vote NO on July 20. ______________ Frank C. Pinkston Tax-Payer@Macon-Bibb.com |
