Political Notebook: State likely to aim high caliber lawyers at activist in road fight

Published: March 29, 2013

A judge advised Macon road activist Lindsay “Doc” Holliday to get a lawyer in his fight with the Georgia Department of Transportation, because the judge expected the state would bring some heavy firepower to bear.

Holliday ultimately got a lawyer on the eve of the last hearing. Meanwhile, the state continues to bulk up.

A notice filed in Bibb County Superior Court says Macon attorneys John A. Draughon and M. Devlin Cooper are going to help out in the case. But the state’s not pulling anyone out, noting that Department of Transportation attorneys still on the case include the state’s attorney general himself, Samuel S. Olens, as well as Deputy Attorney General W. Wright Banks Jr. and a pair of senior assistant attorney generals, Denise E. Whiting-Pack and Mary Jo Volkert.

GDOT is requesting that the Court vacate the TRO or require that Holliday post a bond (suggested to be in the amount of $8.4 million – although no affidavit is provided).

Brutalization

May I offer my “Amen” to David B. Conner’s “Need it or not” letter. What besides personal/political self-interest could possibly motivate any Maconite to keep frantically pushing such an ill-conceived campaign to plunder Forest Hill Road? Using that road more than daily for many years while the mall was still thriving, I felt no need to widen it.

But what is more distressing, is why any of us would viciously attack good folks who have been advocating valiantly for the wellbeing of the Forest Hill neighborhood, for the health of the earth, and for intelligent planning.

A multi-million-dollar lawsuit that looks like a transparent ploy to be punitive, bullying and intimidating? Please. Do we allow a family to be brutalized for earnest efforts on behalf of our town?
