Roundabouts are incredibly efficient as compared to 4-way stop intersections and much safer alternatives to the conventional traffic intersections. If you are becoming more frustrated by the increasing gridlock within your community, consider petitioning your local transportation authorities to encourage the use of more roundabouts at busy intersections. Synthmob wrote on 07/04/2009 11:24:52 AM: I'm in favor of roundabouts... The only one around here I know about is on the Macon State campus. Here's a link to a January 09 presentation by Georgia DOT. http://www.dot.state.ga.us/aboutGeorgiadot/Board/Documents/2009%20Meetings%20Presentations/Jan/Roundabout-1-15-09.pdf tess02840 wrote on 07/04/2009 01:06:51 PM: This is a wonderful idea. I'm sure there is grant money somewhere for it. Other communities get plenty, especially places outside the South. The feds seem to think we should be grateful for all the highway money we get. That does nothing to make town and cities more livable. mb wrote on 07/04/2009 02:10:10 PM: I like the idea. Roundabouts are safer than four way stops, and easier to use. Of course dummies will plow through them on occasion, so it needs to be well marked and lighted. 13WMAZ story: http://www.13wmaz.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=200990122010 City of Macon and Georgia Power crews are trying to repair traffic lights damaged by a truck at two intersections on Ingleside Avenue According to a city of Macon news release, a truck knocked down utility poles at Ingleside and Vista Circle and Ingleside at Pierce Avenue around 5 a.m. The traffic signal flasher at Ingleside Avenue and Vista Circle was damaged, and it will take two to three hours for Georgia Power to repair it, according to the news release issued around 10 a.m. At Ingleside Avenue and Pierce Avenue the traffic signal pole was knocked down, and it will take eight to 10 hours to replace it, according to the news release. Georgia Power spokeswoman Christy Heiser says about 20 customers lost power, but all service was restored by 10 a.m. ************ A modern Roundabout at Vista and Ingleside (with a standard "truck-apron") would have allowed a semi-truck to make a safe U-turn there - without cracking the utility poles. |

Roundabout in Elligay, Georgia |
Macon's Police Chief, Mike Burns visited Ellijay, Ga at end of October, 2005. He saw a roundabout in the middle of their town square. "I observed the traffic for 30 minutes and everything flowed smoothly." Here is an interesting article about this Roundabout at http://www.gwinnettforum.com/2003issues/03.0930.htm See a nice zoom-in map of the 6-way intersection at http://maps.google.com |

Example of a configuration (link) that can have 40% less accidents. 70% less injuries than GDOT plans: It also shows Northside Hospital entrance and - Charter Blvd realigned to boost network flow between Wimbish to Rivoli Drive and Forsyth Road. Not to scale. See details (here) Actual footprint would be much narrower. |
